What is the Zoë Life?

Have you ever heard of “zoë” other than it perhaps being used as a girl’s name?

Did you know that the word “zoë” is used over 100+ times in the New Testament?

In the Bible, the Greek word “zoë” is used to describe the fullness of life that comes from a relationship with God.

It speaks of God’s abundance!

Specifically, in John 10:10, Jesus says, “...I have come to give life (zoë), and that they might have it more abundantly.”

Zoë can also be translated as “God’s kind of life”, “abundantly overflowing”, or as “eternal life”. Some consider this life as “life beyond what you could ever think of, ask for, or imagine.”

This is important to understand.

Jesus didn’t come to start a church, to improve humanity, or give us a code of conduct.

He tells us that He came “to give you everything in abundance,

more than you expect – life in its fullness until you overflow!”

This is the zoë life!

This is what is available for you and me!

And, we have the opportunity to live connected to His zoë life (His Abundance)

Here are some more examples of “zoë” in the Bible:

John 10:10 – “The Enemy comes to steal from you, kill things that matter to you, and destroy your attempts, but I have come that you may have life (zoë) and this kind of life (zoë) most abundantly.”

This verse seems to be the most commonly referenced verse when speaking of God’s abundant zoë-life. The Greek word zoë refers to His divine, abundant, and eternal life that is a gift from God, Himself. It is a stark contrast to bios, which refers to simple physical life. This Greek word zoë is truly more than what people can imagine. Some say that the zoë life is limitless — it is a life that constantly keeps getting bigger and better, more rewarding than people could have ever imagined.

John 1:4 – “In Him (Jesus) was life (zoë), and the life (zoë) was the light of men.”

This verse uses zoë to refer to the divine life of God. In this verse, we get a hint of what this life will do for us:  “In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.”  Light can stand for development.  In other words, “In Him was life; and the life was the development of men.” Or, “In Him was zoë, and zoë was the development of men.”

This verse also refers to the Light (Jesus’ Spirit) that radiates through the lives of people, their words, choices, and behavior.

John 3:16 – “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him (Jesus) should not perish, but have everlasting life (zoë).”

John 17:3 – “This is eternal life (zoë): a new, intimate relationship with You (the one True God) and Jesus Christ, the Anointed One (the One You have sent).”

1 John 5:11 — “God gave us eternal life (zoë), and this life (zoë) is in His Son.”

Romans 6:23 – "The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life (zoë) through Jesus Christ our Lord."

These verses use zoë to refer to the Bible reiterating the fact that only through Jesus is eternal salvation possible.

These verses also highlight that God is giving His own nature to our spirit, as our spirit becomes one with His Spirit.

Jesus is the only Way

The powerful Zoë Life

The zoë life is an indestructible life that will never be snuffed out.

In John 8:51, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, anyone who hears My voice and keeps (obeys) My Word and will never experience death.”

This everlasting, eternal zoë-life that Jesus came to give us IS the nature of God.

John 5:26 and John 6:57 says, "As the Father hath life (zoë) in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have life (zoë) in Himself . . .and the person who feeds on me will have life (zoë) because of Me."

This is the miraculous recreating of man.

It is described by the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

Paul is not talking about the body (the outward man) or the mind. He's talking about the spirit (the inward man) experiencing a “new birth”, which is now one with Christ’s Spirit.

It is this life (zoë) and nature of God coming into your spirit that makes the inward man a new indestructible creature (a “son of God”).

Thus, 1 John 4:17 becomes true for our lives. It reads, “As He (Jesus) is, so are we in this world.”

With verse upon verse, we gather an understanding that the Zoë-Life is Jesus!

If we desire an abundant life, our souls are ultimately desiring Jesus!
